The most important thing in any long-distance relationship is to make your partner feel special, valued and loved. It's important to not only take time to be with them, but to make this time feel important. Taking time for your partner is easier when you're in the same place. You can spend an hour together at dinner, you bring them breakfast in bed, you can put their towel in the dryer while their showering so they come out to something warm.
My boyfriend and I have definitely been stuck in that rut. We've gotten on FaceTime before and just gotten stuck in a loop of I miss yous and how was your days. It was hard, and it started to feel like our relationship was more "routine" than special. That's why, for our two-year anniversary, I created this great date jar full of ideas for us to choose from. Below are my three favorite ones!
Sunday Brunch in your PJ’s! My favorite thing to do when I’m in town is to get up early and cook so we can have breakfast in bed. You can do this when you’re apart too! Each of you makes coffee, put on some music, and just FaceTime in your PJ’s. No mess or fuss. We love doing crosswords together, and we’ll always ask each other for help on clues we’re stuck on.
Mad Libs Love Letter! I try to send Jack a letter every week, so I love this idea. There are a ton of templates you can fill out online. While you’re facetiming, ask them to help you pick the words, but DON’T read them the letter. Instead, mail it to them so they can have a laugh later on.
Dinner date! This is probably the thing I miss most about being with him. But we can still do it! Pick a restaurant (either the same chain, or with the same type of food) and prop the phone up on the other end of the table. Pretend you’re eating together. Don’t worry, even if you look a little silly, as soon as you tell people why you’re doing it, they’re going to love the idea!!
